Plant uptake and stream chemistry set global bounds on nitrogen gas emissions from humid tropical forests

چکیده
Denitrification and hydrologic leaching are the two major pathways by which nitrogen is lost from the terrestrial biosphere. Humid tropical forests are thought to dominate denitrification from unmanaged lands globally, but there is large uncertainty about the range and key drivers of total N gas emissions across the biome. We combined pantropical measures of small watershed stream chemistry with ecosystem modeling to determine total nitrogen gas losses

Securing tropical forest carbon: the contribution of protected areas to REDD
Forest loss and degradation in the tropics contribute 6–17% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Protected areas cover 217.2 million ha (19.6%) of the world’s humid tropical forests and contain c. 70.3 petagrams of carbon (Pg C) in biomass and soil to 1 m depth. Between 2000 and 2005, we estimate that 1.75 million ha of forest were lost from protected areas in humid tropical forests, causing the em...
متن کاملPlant and Microbial Controls on Nitrogen Retention and Loss in a Humid Tropical Forest
Humid tropical forests are generally characterized by the lack of nitrogen (N) limitation to net primary productivity, yet paradoxically have high potential for N loss. We conducted an intensive field experiment with NH4 and NO3 additions to highly weathered tropical forest soils in Puerto Rico to determine the relative importance of N retention and loss mechanisms. Over one-half of all the NH4...
متن کاملGlobal Warming and Tropical Land-use Change: Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Biomass Burning, Decomposition and Soils in Forest Conversion, Shifting Cultivation and Secondary Vegetation
Tropical forest conversion, shifting cultivation and clearing of secondary vegetation make significant contributions to global emissions of greenhouse gases today, and have the potential for large additional emissions in future decades. Globally, an estimated 3.1× 109 t of biomass carbon of these types is exposed to burning annually, of which 1.1×109 t is emitted to the atmosphere through combu...
متن کاملHuman nitrogen fixation and greenhouse gas emissions: a global assessment
The net impact of human nitrogen (N) fixation on climate (ignoring short-lived components) mainly depends on the magnitude of the warming effect of (direct and indirect) nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and the cooling effect of N-induced carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. N-induced CO2 uptake is caused by anthropogenic N deposition which increases net primary production (NPP) in N-limited ecosystems an...
متن کاملClimate change, allergy and asthma, and the role of tropical forests
BACKGROUND Tropical forests cover less than 10 per cent of all land area (1.8 × 107 km2) and over half of the tropical-forest area (1.1 × 107 Km2) is represented by humid tropical forests (also called tropical rainforests). The Amazon basin contains the largest rainforest on Earth, almost 5.8 million km2, and occupies about 40% of South America; more than 60% of the basin is located in Brazil a...
